The British Council produced a 2008 calendar and diary featuring photographs taken by Annabel Elston, English, and Muammer Yanmaz, Turkish, for a project called 40 Stations

The irony for me is I have never collaborated with the British Council before despite approaching them in the UK, Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul. Annabel took my photo about a year ago; I had to drag myself from my sick bed and below you can see me as January's jumping image. I was so ill that day...

The painting Spacecage was produced for the Mayadrom? Yeah! exhibition in 1999. It was later purchased and presented to the Suzer Plaza where it now resides.

Gokkafes Mavisi / Spacecage Blue was produced as part of the TBV43 Collection in 2001 and can be seen at the Bobrek Hastanesi Vakfi in Bakirkoy, Istanbul.

In 2002 the images were used for a Suzer Plaza - Ritz Carlton brochure presentation.

"I've come to regard the Gokkafes; the Space Cage, as an affectionate term for the Ritz-Carlton, one of the most recognisable landmarks of the Istanbul skyline. I first painted it in 1998 as construction cranes loomed above, over-looking the attractive Besiktas football stadium and uniquely located by the mighty Bosphorus. This controversial architectural statement symbolises the contradictions, dichotomies and progression of modern Turkey dragging herself up, up and away from the past. When ever I return to Istanbul, the Gokkafes is a solid, comforting and reassuring sight welcoming me home. I imagine at night, when no one is looking, this Gokkafes character opens its eyes with a gentle giant smile, checking all it purveys is OK."

2005 Sabiha Gokcen

March 8th is celebrated as Women’s Day in Turkey. To commemorate this NPP produced a portrait of Sabiha Gokcen; the world's first combat pilot...

Ali Koc purchased the portrait and presented it to Gulsah Celiker in recognition of a TV film documentary she had produced about Sabiha.

In this article you can still see the rainbow colours in the painting. I was later advised to paint them out for fear of offending some one. How one is offended by rainbow colours is not clear, but when in foreign parts do as the Romans do etc...How silly and I should have left the rainbow colours as they were in the photo below...

2003 Poland? Yeah!

A first introduction to Poland was made by NPP August 2003, visiting Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Posnan, Sopot and Gdansk. Among the highlights was a trip to Gdansk Shipyard, origins of Lech Walesa and the Solidarity movement in the 1980’s.
NPP stumbled across Anete Szylak who was curating a performance art happening within the shipyard that evening. The highlight was a 9 hole round of golf by Canadian performance artist John G. Boehme.

A moment in Turkish sporting history

The first Turkish goal in the World Cup Finals for 45 years - this was the moment when Hasan Sas dispatched the ball toward the Brazilian goal for Turkey’s opening goal during the 2002 World Cup Finals; a moment when a nation as a whole raised its game and began to believe in the possible.

It had been 45 years since Turkey had reached the World Cup Finals. Their first game of the 2002 tournament was set against the mighty Brazil, arguably the best national team in the world and World Cup Champions several times before. Few outside Turkey expected the Turkish side to do well, let alone compete for the final stages and eventually finish in a remarkable 3rd place. This goal was the beginning of an adventure which raised the expectations of a nation and made the rest of the world take notice.

When the team returned to Istanbul, the roads were lined with cheering crowds all the way from the airport to Taksim Square, pushing a half-hour journey nearer to 4 hours.

Sport is a fabulous common denominator, bringing people together despite background or circumstance. This one international footballing image captures a very special moment for The Turkish Football Federation, Turkey and its people.

NPP wanted this painting to go into a public space where everyday Turkish youngsters can be inspired to belief in the possible and that impossible is impossible. It was bought at an auction and today I don't know where it hangs.

Talking further on football.......it is well known to those close to NPP that Arsenal is the favourite team. In Turkey, every time this subject matter is broached, any Galatasarary supporting Turk is quick to point out the UEFA Cup victory their beloved Cim Com had over Arsenal - on penalties we hasten to add. NPP replies: who cares? It's not the Champions League!

When asked which Turkish team NPP supports, we remain diplomatic:

Spelt with Turkish font characters...
Gala-Beş-Bahçe or Fen-Taş-Aray or Beş-Aray-Bahçe.......

So much money is spent on national PR campaigns by the Ministry of Tourism & Culture yet not enough was done to ensure the most was made of Galatasaray's UEFA or the World Cup success. There are 70 million passionate football fans in Turkey, yet the game is run by an elite few who seem to neglect the potential benefits and interests of the popular majority.

And what is it with football that Europe, Asia, South America and most of the world get it, but the USA apparently doesn't? Even though the USA national soccer team gets better and better, still it is apparently not a majority sport.

In 2002, TAV, the managing company of Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, used the NPP image Where East Meets West for the production of calendars and mouse pads primarily for a Trade Conference in Berlin. Such an image is perfect for welcoming new arrivals within the airport terminal building.

In 2002 the TASK Foundation (archaeological organisation) collaborated with NPP on a calendar featuring Istanbul? Yeah! imagery. Published by the corporate sponsors of the TAY Project and the TASK Foundation, the calendar promoted the vitally important work undertaken by the TAY Project and TASK to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Turkey. Over 12,000 copies of the TASK / Istanbul? Yeah! Calendar were distributed with Power Magazine throughout Turkey.
NPP paintings feature lively scenes of Turkish street life, frequently incorporating buildings, sites and monuments of historical and archaeological importance to Turkey. These images, with their bold and imaginative use of colour, communicate the joy and energy of life in Turkey, make NPP imagery particularly suitable as a showcase for the fundraising campaign of the TAY Project and the TASK foundation.

In 2001 German corporation Bayer commissioned NPP to create a collection of illustrations for inclusion within a power point presentation. This presentation was used at seminars introducing the company’s strategy within the crop protection market.

The 1999 image Cumhuriyet Bus Ride was superimposed with a Coca-Cola logo and Coca-Cola bottles to become Coca-Cola Bus Ride.

The 1999 image Honk! Hoot! Simit! was superimposed with Coca-Cola bottles to become Honk! Hoot! Kolaci!

January 2001 The Strategic Review Group organised this Anglo-Turk collaboration bringing together English artist Ned Pamphilon and The Lutfi Kirdar Conference and Exhibition Centre to produce:

NPP Ataturk

Ataturk Gulumsuyor, a painting donated to The I.C.E.C. by NPP, treats a traditional image of the founder of The Turkish Republic with a contemporary style.

Possibly the largest (3.5m x 2m) original Ataturk portrait of its type, this welcome addition of colour and grandeur to the main foyer of the Lutfi Kirdar complex keeps it up-to-date with new neighbour, The Rumeli Fair and Exhibition Hall, thanks largely to the foresight of I.C.E.C. General Manager Orhan Sanus.

Ataturk was very aware of his public profile and veered toward a serious image portraying his serious intentions. In this case, however, the artist has captured a rare glimpse of the man with a smile in his eyes and his heart – the real Ataturk. It is perhaps poetic irony that an Englishman should produce Ataturk Gulumsüyor and this may be viewed as another small yet positive step forward in Anglo-Turk relations.

Ataturk’s image is a powerful one symbolising a vision of national unity, education, art, science and liberty for both man and womankind alike. He paid keen attention to literature, music, fashion and the arts and fully appreciated the innovations and philosophies inspired by such:

2000 Gebze? Yeah!

In 1999 Bericap Turkiye purchased Bizarre Spice for Pepsi Turkiye HQ. NPP produced this painting to commemorate the Spice Girls visit to Turkey in 1997 when Pepsi posters carrying Spice Girls were common at every bus stop. The 6th face is of course "Ned Spice"...

Bericap also commissioned paintings for it’s boardroom. Caps in Space I and II depicted the company’s product, caps and stoppers, flying through Nedspace...

In 2000 Bericap commissioned three new paintings for the new Chamber of Commerce building in Gebze including an NPP Ataturk Smiles...

A larger painting features three ‘sons’ of Gebze: Anibal, Hamdi and Yahya. Two military figures are presented from different periods of Turkish history: Anibal, as portrayed in book and film. Kaptan Yahya, a hero of the Ataturk era. In addition to these, we present one of the most influential Turkish artists, Osman Hamdi. These portraits inform visitors something of Gebze’s past.

The largest of the paintings, Gebze? Yeah! depicts a collage of Gebze’s landmarks including the The Chamber of Commerce building itself, the local football stadium, a principle mosque, industrial and manufacturing sites, Osman Hamdi’s house and most impressive of all, the castle overlooking the picturesque harbour below...

Indeed, it’s an area where industry and natural beauty sit side by side, symbolised by the newly renovated castle financed and coordinated Bericap Turkiye, a company that has made environmental concerns a priority with the funding of a tree planting scheme in the local area. The images on the boardroom wall are important and can make a difference, providing a reference point for the members of the Chamber of Commerce to introduce Gebze to a new or existing client. These paintings emphasise Gebze’s cultural and historic aspects in addition to being an industrial centre. They provide visitors with a sense of time and place, creating some perspective of what and where Gebze is: Gebze? Yeah!

P.S. I have not seen these paintings for a long time, but have been told the Chamber of Commerce have stuck the names of the paintings on the painted surfaces. No! Please don't do that!

When in 2002 S.T.F.A. were looking for an appropriate way to commemorate their 30 year working relationship with Libya, they again decided upon a commissioned portrait. STFA and Libya have collaborated to develop contemporary and innovative designs and visions in the field of construction. It seemed appropriate to commission a contemporary style portrait of Libya’s leading statesman: Colonel Gadhafi. The long-term vision for Libya has been partly implemented by land development and construction undertaken by STFA, who have been at the forefront of such ventures for 30 years, building international relationships and helping to realise the visions of nations.

1998 Solgar Turkiye

In 1998 NPP created 32 original illustrations and and adapted a character storyline to present the Solgar vitamin products within Solgar Vitamins brochures. An initial run of 30,000 brochures was eventually increased to 100’s of thousands as Solgar became a leading market brand. The illustrations were used for the Solgar website and further artwork was created for a 3 month advertising campaign within 13 high-profile magazines in Turkey.

The making of a crop circle : This crop circle formation named The Web was created in 1994. It became a regular event for an individual to hire a small aircraft and photograph the season’s patterns and formations. The phenomena created interest for tourists and added to the whole crop circle / UFO myth. The image of The Web was broadcast across UK national TV and reproduced many times within national media publications.
